Gifts in Kind
United Way of San Diego County is a program affiliate of the Gifts In Kind International Program headquartered in Alexandria, VA. As such, membership in the United Way of San Diego County program is limited to local nonprofits within its immediate geographic area only. Interested nonprofits outside of the local geographic area may apply directly to Gifts In Kind International through their website at www.giftsinkind.org.
Gifts In Kind has distributed nearly $900 million in new product donations to 150,000 charities helping 13 million people in need. Products include office and building supplies; cosmetics, personal care and novelty items; educational and youth materials; toys; computer games; and computer software. Administrative fees are charged based on the costs associated with distributing and shipping the donation to charities, not on percentage of the donation’s value.
Terms & conditions of this unique opportunity require that the recipient organization be tax exempt and use of the goods be related to the purpose that makes the organization tax exempt. Donated products CAN NOT be used for fundraisers, raffles or auctions, given to volunteers or staff members, or sold in retail or thrift stores, on Web sites or in flea markets or in any other manner.
Violation of any of the above terms & conditions will result in immediate termination of membership and legal action will be taken. In addition, any goods received from Gifts In Kind will not be used with the intention or knowledge that they will be used to commit a terrorist act. Recipient organization is also required to maintain adequate books and records of these donations as required by applicable tax regulations and to make such records available upon request.
