Last week, we packed and distributed 375 backpacks

Last week, we packed and distributed 375 backpacks filled with school supplies to TK–5th graders at Herbert Ibarra Elementary in City Heights. To a child, a new backpack is so much more than canvas and zippers– it’s confidence, preparation, and the excitement of starting day one on the right foot.

We believe that long-term financial security begins with early opportunity. By investing in young learners today and supporting their families along the way, we’re helping build a brighter future for our community.

This event was made possible by the generosity and partnership of Navy Federal Credit Union, HD Supply, Eli Lilly, Equity Residential, Microbiologics, Embolden, MyPoint Credit Union, and Collins Aerospace.

Together, we are investing in local students and helping families start the school year with one less financial burden.

Many high school students face financial barriers

Many high school students face financial barriers that limit access to extracurricular programs or unpaid internships, leaving little room for unpaid career-building opportunities.

Through our STEAM-to-Careers and Dream with STEAM programs, students receive an educational award that helps remove these barriers, ensuring dedicated students from all economic backgrounds can access meaningful work experiences, professional networks, and pathways to career advancement.

Since launching these programs, United Way of San Diego County has provided over $171,500 in educational awards. Learn more at uwsd.org/steam-to-careers

It’s National Financial Awareness Day. What’s one financial tip you wish you learned in high school? We believe that establishing lasting financial security begins long before a person enters the full-time workforce. Financial literacy education is vital for today's youth and our local STEAM to Careers and Dream with STEAM programs are putting financial tools directly into students' hands.
